Troubleshooting Toilet Training for Individuals with Profound Autism & Other Developmental Disabilities (Dr. Lynn Brennan) – 1 BACB CE

This session provides a comprehensive overview of effective strategies for training urine and stool continence in individuals with profound autism and other developmental disabilities. Participants will gain insight into evidence-based guidelines for achieving successful outcomes. The session also addresses common obstacles, such as toilet avoidance, chronic urinary tract infections, and constipation, offering practical troubleshooting approaches to overcome these challenges. Dr. Lynn Brennan, a seasoned expert with over 25 years of experience in behavioral and educational consulting for children with autism, brings a wealth of knowledge and international training expertise to this important topic.

Sleep and Profound Autism (Emily Varon) – 1 BCBA CE

With up to 80% of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder experiencing sleep problems (e.g., Furfaro, 2020 and Reynolds, 2019), it is crucial for the teams treating within this unique community to enhance their understanding of sleep. Additionally, with 26.7% of these children identified as profoundly autistic (approximately 1/4 according to the CDC), understanding the impact of sleep problems on our learners and families leads to an even more important dimension of treatment.

This Continuing Education event aims to unveil the influence poor sleep has on daytime functioning and highlights the potential for compassionate sleep programming to reduce problem daytime behaviors, improve skill acquisition, and increase willingness to learn. Participants will gain insights into the potential for prerequisite sleep-skill programming during instructional time and will learn how common daytime skills, when improved and learned to mastery, can significantly enhance outcomes for families at bedtime. Additionally, this event will provide evidence-based information about sleep which attendees will be able to use immediately to improve daytime functioning, skill acquisition, and reduce problem behaviors by improving sleep in the home.

CE Learning Objectives: At the end of this CEU, participants will:

1. Understand the role of sleep in daytime functioning.
2. Identify prerequisite skills and systems which can be easily practiced during the day and maintained by families at night.
3. Apply considerations for accommodating learners with severe behavior profiles and medical comorbidities.

This one-hour session delves into the practice of teaching yoga to individuals with profound autism. Participants will gain an understanding of teaching techniques and specific yoga poses that can be adapted to accommodate the unique needs of this population.
